| Our Hibiscuses I have planted twelve (12) Lord Baltimore hibiscuses (Deep Red Blue Color—Dinner
Plate Size) along the road edge of our property. The hibiscuses don’t
even come up until late May. This past year we had over 3,700 blossoms
on the 12 plants. I go out and deadhead (cut the dead flowers off) the
flowers every morning and count the blossoms and then log them into the
computer in Excel. Unfortunately the blossom only lasts one day and if
the blossom is not cut, all the energy from the plant will go into
making seeds—we don’t want seeds—we want more flowers. Linda feeds them
number 45 phosphate. Phosphate is what makes the flowers bloom. We have
people stopping to inquire what the flowers are and telling us how much
they enjoy them. There are many more hibiscus plants scattered
throughout our yard of various other species and colors! |
